"For some reason, the most vocal Christians among us never mention the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). But, often with tears in their eyes, they demand that the Ten Commandments be posted in public buildings. I haven't heard one of them demand that the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, be posted anywhere. 'Blessed are the merciful' in a courtroom? 'Blessed are the peacemakers' in the Pentagon? Give me a break!" -  Kurt Vonnegut, 20th century

“The one thing I love most about the Baptism of our Lord text is not just that God the Father says ‘This is my son, the beloved with whom I am well pleased’, but that God says this – before Jesus had really done anything. Think about that.  God did not say ‘this is my son in whom I am well pleased because he has proved to me that he deserves it, he has quiet time with me each morning and always reads his Torah and because boy can he heal a leper.’ – Nadia Bolz Weber

The Brightness That You Bear

“It is terribly important to realize that the leap of faith is not so much a leap of thought as of action. For while in many matters it is first we must see then we will act; in matters of faith it is first we must do then we will know, first we will be and then we will see. One must, in short, dare to act wholeheartedly without absolute certainty.”― William Sloane Coffin Jr., Credo
