Faith
Our tradition is "non-creedal." This means that we do not have a creed or doctrinal statement to which members must adhere. Each member shall have the freedom to follow the Word of God according to the dictates of his or her own conscience, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We honor the classic creeds as valid human expressions of Christian belief in the context of that place and time. We believe that all such statements are testimonies to faith, and they should not be used as tests of faith. The true test of membership is living in accordance with the teachings of Jesus.
One expression of our faith is the United Church of Christ Statement of Faith, approved by the Second General Synod of the United Church of Christ, 1959 (revised 1981):
We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit,
God of our Savior Jesus Christ and our God,
and to your deeds we testify:
You call the worlds into being,
create persons in your own image,
and set before each one the ways of life and death.
You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.
You judge people and nations by your righteous will
declared through prophets and apostles.
In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior,
you have come to us and shared our common lot,
conquering sin and death
and reconciling the world to yourself.
You bestow on us your Holy Spirit,
creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ,
binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues and races.
You call us into your Church
to accept the cost and joy of discipleship,
to be your servants in the service of others,
to proclaim the gospel to all the world,
to resist the powers of evil,
to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table,
to join him in his passion and victory.
You promise to all who trust you
forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace,
courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
your presence in trial and rejoicing,
and eternal life in your realm, which has no end.
Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you. Amen.
Mission Statement
Grounded in openness, with respect and justice for all, the Mission of Rincon Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) is to be a welcoming and progressive Christian community that believes in a God who is more about grace than judgment. Inspired by meaningful worship and teaching, we strive to be God's heart and hands in action, seeking to be living examples of Christ's abundant love.
Our mission has been expanded by the addition of the following two scripture passages:
Matthew 25: 35-37: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was a thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
Jeremiah 17: 7-8 “Blessed are those who trust in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord, they shall be like a tree planted by the water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.”
